Creatives’ Tender: Australian presence at Venice Biennale 2011 concept development, graphic design and production

The Venice Biennale is widely regarded as the most important and prestigious event on the international contemporary arts calendar for countries to showcase their contemporary visual artists. Australia has been consistently represented at the Biennale for more than three decades. The featured Australian artist for the 2011 Venice Biennale is Hany Armanious, who will present a selection of new and existing works.

Over 70 countries participate in the Venice Biennale. The event attracts 30,000 key international curators, critics, collectors and artists to the three-day Vernissage (preview) period alone, and a further 265,000 visitors (including school groups and young adults) to the six-month exhibition.

The primary goal of Australia’s participation in the Venice Biennale is to increase the profile of the featured artist, secondly, to profile contemporary Australian art internationally and thirdly, the Australia Council as the managers of Australia at the Venice Biennale.

The Australia Council’s Market Development division is seeking inspired proposals from graphic design agencies to undertake the concept development, graphic design, production and delivery of collateral to be produced for the Australian presence at the Venice Biennale 2011.

Please note – this is a revised version of the tender document as of Wednesday 27 April 2010.

The deadline for receipt of proposals is 5pm (EST) 21 May, 2010.

Today we received the following notice from the Annual Design Awards. It is open to anyone in the world. It would be great to see a Queenslander win one of the catagories if not all of them.

The awards present a wonderful opportunity for graphic designers to have their work judged by luminaries in the industry like David Carson, Chuck Anderson, James Verdesoto (designer of the Pulp Fiction movie poster), Nik Ainley and Laura Smith. These people and more will be judging entries.

The awards exist to discover and celebrate outstanding talents in the design world and to reward creativity with a meaningful honour. Entry fees are low and a portion of the profits will be donated to Cancer Research UK. Every entrant will feature in the new Designers Directory, have the chance to feature in the yearly book that will be published to showcase the best designs, and have access to the website notice board where designers can promote their business, special offers, job vacancies and more.

Queensland is now moving towards a preventative approach to job losses, focusing on helping businesses to be resilient to the effects of the global financial crisis and to prepare for the future as conditions improve.

The Creative Industries sector, although relatively new, already adds $1.96 billion to the value of Queensland’s services and manufacturing sectors each year. The Queensland Government has recognised the importance of the Industry by adding it to the Jobs Assist program.
The Queensland Government has implemented the Jobs Assist program that will provide strong support for businesses that have been identified as requiring recognised support services. Jobs Assist will provide support to businesses with 10 or more FTE’s within set Priority Employment Areas or to businesses in other areas with 10 or more FTE employees that are in key sectors considered to be critical or strategic to the State, region or industry eg Creative Industries.
One of our major sponsors, Margin Media, has been awarded professional consultant status to provide such support to eligible businesses and will provide up to $8,000 of assistance to the client funded by the Queensland Government.

Support will be provided in two stages:
Stage 1 will provide up to $3,000 to assist the client to engage Margin Media to conduct an assessment of the client’s business and develop an Online Action Plan to address all strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the business including an effective reporting process and select strategies and actions to support and improve the business.
Stage 2 will provide up to $5,000 to assist the client to implement the activities identified as immediate priority tasks in their Online Action Plan that could include an effective reporting process, through the engagement of Margin Media, to mentor or provide expert advice on the implementation process.
For more information on this important initiative and to see if your business is eligible, please contact Margin Media on 1300 798 848 or visit www.marginmedia.com.au/jobs-assist
