This Creative Drinks is all about interaction through collaboration. And For Us By Us is making a presentation to show us just how interaction through collaboration can be done.

For Us By Us is a collaborative model for the creative industries. It is an ongoing project facilitated by RaraCurio and Vegas Spray.

The first project included 24 fashion design students and 6 local emerging artists. Inspired by the work of each artist, the designers created garments that were exhibited in fashion film.

The premiere took place on the 29 October 2010 at the Tribal Theatre in Brisbane. The collaboration was also the subject of a documentary film exploring the themes of (1) creative capital and popularity in fashion and art and what cross-disciplinary collaboration offers in this respect, and (2) the viability of a raw creative economy in underdeveloped cultural hubs like Brisbane.

At the Creative Drinks Christmas Party, Travis Dewan of Vegas Spray will showcase the concept behind For Us By Us and give you an insight into the possibilities of For Us By Us.

The results of the first collaboration For Us By Us facilitated were stunning, both fashion film and documentary were captivating in their expression of art and fashion. But the team is very much focused on the process.

For Us By Us is not just about art and fashion in beautiful films. For Us By Us is about uniting the disciplines of the creative industries to work together on a project of mutual interest and mutual benefit.

The documentary film of the first project demonstrates this – fashion students and established artists pushed the boundaries of their practice. Technical skills, methods of working and ways of researching concepts were exchanged and developed.

Visit www.forusbyus.com.au to watch the films or for more information about the first For Us By Us project.

With a passion for invigorating Brisbane’s creative sector For Us By Us are always looking to instigate new collaborations.

Bring your Christmas cheer and collaborative spirit to the Creative Drinks on 16 December and find out what For Us By Us has in store for the Brisbane creative industries.

Introducing ….

+he Arcade Crea+ive

“We are a creative collective. We market, promote and run large scale events and festivals. We also offer a full marketing and design solution for businesses and brands.

We are based out of Brisbane, Australia. Yes, we like it here. The weather is nice, the people are cool, the opportunities are a plenty and the parties are crazy. We are also very close to some beautiful beaches. There is an emerging creative scene that is about to explode out of the south east, and we are out to do what we can to embrace it and show it off to the world.

We love what we do and we love doing what we do for our clients. We take things very seriously and we like to have fun at the same time. We understand marketing is about achieving results, not just about making some noise. Luckily for our clients, we manage to do both.”

We welcome Adrian Mezzina, Co-Director of Arcade Creative to this October’s Creative Drinks to tell us more about the inner workings of the entrepreneurial phenomenon that is +he Arcade Crea+ive. To get you aquainted in advance (for those of you who don’t already know) here’s a little background on the man himself….

Adrian just loves music and entertainment marketing. He’s known for successfully developing marketing strategies for Brisbane venues and events, including for the likes of the Katarzyna Group and Sneaky Sound System.

Before recently branching with his own The Arcade Creative, he was closely associated with the marketing and promoting of festivals in Queensland including Good Vibrations, Summafieldayze, Future Music Festival, Stereosonic, and Tiesto’s Kaleidoscope tour.

Elsewhere, he was invited to be a panelist at the Big Sound Music Conference, recently appointed as the QLD social editor for the new national publication, Junior, and is currently an industry partner, guest lecturer & tutor for QUT Creative Industries’ new Entertainment program.

Australian design and art collective Rinzen is best known for the collaborative approach of its five members, forming as a result of their visual and audio remix project, RMX. Extending the concept for their 2001 book, the group invited over 30 international participants to sequentially rework digital art. Most recently the project has taken a hands-on turn, yielding a series of toys which were made and remade as they were sent from country to country.

The group’s work has been shown in galleries from Mexico City to Tokyo, their designs commissioned by Puma, MTV, Vogue and Nylon and their books published and distributed internationally. Their designs have appeared on everything from wallpaper and fabric to bicycles and toys.

Members of the group are based in Berlin, Brisbane, Sydney and New York.

Adrian Clifford (Brisbane) will be sharing the concept of Rinzen at October’s Creative Drinks event.

Brisbane Sounds was established in 2006 by primary school teacher, music promoter and Brisbane music aficionado, Blair Hughes with the principal aim being to promote the Brisbane music scene worldwide through the production of an annual compilation album of Brisbane music. The goal was to create a unique marketing tool designed to highlight the quality and diversity of the Brisbane music scene and promote Brisbane as a music city.

Brisbane Sounds has produced four compilation albums, starting in 2007 through to the most recent 2010 compilation to encouraging feedback, review and radio play around the world. Brisbane Sounds has been featured in JMag, The Big Issue, ScotCampus, The Courier Mail, Sunday Mail and on US, UK, 4ZZZ and Triple JJJ Radio.

The Brisbane Sounds compilations have featured over 70 Brisbane artists from a diverse cross section of musical genres and have included bands such as The Gin Club, Regurgitator, The Coalition Crew, I Heart Hiroshima, Hungary Kids of Hungary as well as My Fiction and Disco Nap who were recently featured on US radio, An Horse who were featured on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2009 and The Boat People who secured a publicity deal in the USA as a result of the 2008 compilation.

2010 has been a busy year for the Brisbane Sounds team and has seen Brisbane Sounds represented at the world’s largest music conference SXSW in Texas, USA, the introduction of the Brisbane gig guide IPhone App (BRISSOUNDS), the redesign of the website to become a database and one stop shop for Brisbane music as well as the establishment of Young Bloods and The 100 Club and the tour management of our first international artist in Richmond Fontaine from the USA. Further down the track Brisbane Sounds will be launching a TV pilot as well as a documentary focusing on the state and role of the Brisbane music scene in 2011.

Blair is currently teaching Film and TV at MIC (Music Industry College) and has previously spent three years working at the Zoo Nightclub in Brisbane as well as a year at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. Blair is a passionate Brisbane music ambassador who has represented Brisbane music through Brisbane Sounds at the Great Escape conference in Brighton, England as well as SXSW in the US. Blair prides himself on making the best riders for local bands having been inspired by the boozy culinary delights of the German rock and roll scene in Hamburg!
We look forward to hearing a little more from this passionate and entrepreneurial music man at Drinks this month!

For those of you who are still a little ‘green around the ears’…..

On 17 September 2010, car spaces all over the world were transformed into parks, outdoor lounge rooms, public art spaces, outdoor offices, knitted gardens, and much more for International PARK(ing) Day. In Brisbane 60 of these PARKs were created in car spaces by students, artists, community groups, businesses, designers … and more. Amy Saunders co-ordinates the yearly event by promoting what the day is about, seeking out interested PARKers and promoting where/when people will be.

PARK(ing) Day has been occurring in Brisbane since 2007 – with 1 PARK in 2007, 45 in 2008, 50 in 2009 and 60 in 2010! We keep growing each year and will be back in 2011. Why don’t you join in on 16 September 2011?!

The PARKs are surprising, fun additions to the everyday street environments, and powerful symbols of placemaking and communities wanting to improve urban quality.

Brisbane PARK(ing) Day is all about –
1. Calling attention to the importance for urban public spaces
2. Rethinking the way we use our streets

3. Creating diverse conversations about how we can make sustainable cities

RIGHT ANGLE STUDIO/FOURTHOUSAND

We are excited to announce that Rachel Surgeoner, editor of Brisbane’s finest subculture blog site Fourthousand and local representative of awesome creative department Right Angle Studio will be stepping up for Julys upcoming Drinks to share insights, experiences and divulge the inner workings of two very cool, creative and collaborative brands.

In the spirit of getting you acquainted: do read on

Rachel always hoped to become either a curator or a DJ. But somehow ended up in publishing. It was the thrill of the chase that got her there after penning a story about following her favourite band all over the UK. Straight out of university she Edited independent arts/music/ fashion magazine, UV. Known for it’s celebratory launch parties and support of local bands a new wave began in the form of a club night, Wolfgang which she co-founded with good friends Adam Hunter, Ashley Chang and Andy Miller. When UV came to its bittersweet end, FourThousand.com.au needed a new right hand man (or lady as it would be). Rachel has edited the online publication for the past two years and also works part-time booking bands at Brisbane’s iconic live music venue The Zoo. Still a novice on the decks, Rachel now curates the best of Brisbane subculture on a weekly basis – all into one nice, neat electronically delivered issue. Life is good being part of the Right Angle family.
